The Nikon Stabilized 10x25 S is a compact 10x binocular with 25 mm objectives and optical image stabilization to cut blur and eye strain from shake. Focus is by a central knob, and the prisms carry a silver-alloy coating. It runs on two AA batteries for up to 12 hours of stabilization. Once activated, stabilization stays on for up to 60 minutes, and the binoculars can be used with it off. The dual-hinge body folds small enough for a pocket.
Our take
Two AA batteries give up to 12 hours of stabilization, and the binoculars still work with it switched off, so flat cells do not leave you without a glass. Stabilization stays on for up to 60 minutes after activation, so expect to switch it on again on a long watch.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
