The Nikon Action 8x42 is a Porro prism binocular with 8x magnification and 42 mm objective lenses, built around an aluminum alloy body with rubber armor. It is meant to give a bright, clear view. It has a 140 m field of view at 1000 m, a 5.3 mm exit pupil and 17.3 mm of eye relief, and weighs 790 g. A large focusing knob can be turned with gloves on, and the eyecups turn and slide to adjust.

Our take

The 140 m field of view at 1000 m on this 8x42 makes a distant buoy or boat easier to find than a narrower view would, and the 5.3 mm exit pupil gives a wide circle of light at the eyepiece. At 790 g it is a fair weight to hold.

From our buying guide

Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.

Check before you buy:

  • The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
  • The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
  • A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
