The Nikon 16x50 Action is a Porro prism binocular with 16x magnification and 50 mm objective lenses. Multicoated optics and the large objectives are aimed at bright, high-contrast views, and the prism layout gives a strong sense of depth. It has a centre focus wheel that works with gloves on, a 73 m field of view at 1000 m and a 60.8° apparent angle of view. It weighs 941 g. It is neither fogproof nor rated for environmental resistance.
Our take
The 60.8° apparent angle of view is meant to tame hand shake at 16x, which helps, but with no fogproofing and no environmental resistance rating these need to stay out of spray and damp air. Keep them in a dry locker between uses.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
