This is a New England Ropes three-strand nylon dock line in navy, 1/2 inch (12 mm) thick and 25 ft (7.62 m) long. The maker treats the nylon with its Marine Tech coating to raise wet strength. It has a listed tensile strength of 7,500 lb. The maker gives its dock line use as vessels up to 40 ft (12.2 m), anchor lines up to 35 ft, and moorings up to 20 ft.

Our take

The 7,500 lb tensile strength on this 1/2 inch line goes with the maker's dock line rating for boats up to 40 feet. The same rope is rated for anchor lines only to 35 feet and moorings to 20 feet, so check the job against those limits.

From our buying guide

Rope makers disagree on the fiber: Samson calls nylon the right one for its stretch, and Marlow calls polyester the most reliable for mooring lines. Marlow also says wet nylon loses strength.

Check before you buy:

  • The diameter suits your boat. Taylor Made pairs 3/8 in line with boats up to 25 ft and 1/2 in line with boats up to 32 ft.
  • The line suits your cleats. The Coast Guard handbook's rule of thumb gives 3/8 in line for a 6 in cleat and 1/2 in line for an 8 in cleat.
  • Strength figures are compared within one maker, since each labels its figure differently.
