This is a double braid nylon dock line from New England Ropes, 1/2 inch (12mm) thick and 35 feet (10.7 m) long, in white. It is a single line, not a set. The maker rates it at 8,000 lb tensile strength and lists it as a dock line for vessels up to 40 feet. For use as a mooring line the stated limit drops to vessels up to 20 feet. The braid is torque balanced so the line resists kinking and handles easily.
Our take
The 8,000 lb tensile rating on a 1/2 inch double braid nylon line gives plenty of numbers to check against your boat, and the maker ties dock use to vessels up to 40 feet. For mooring the limit falls to 20 feet, so read that gap before using it on a mooring.
From our buying guide
Rope makers disagree on the fiber: Samson calls nylon the right one for its stretch, and Marlow calls polyester the most reliable for mooring lines. Marlow also says wet nylon loses strength.
Check before you buy:
- The diameter suits your boat. Taylor Made pairs 3/8 in line with boats up to 25 ft and 1/2 in line with boats up to 32 ft.
- The line suits your cleats. The Coast Guard handbook's rule of thumb gives 3/8 in line for a 6 in cleat and 1/2 in line for an 8 in cleat.
- Strength figures are compared within one maker, since each labels its figure differently.
