This is the Lewmar Synchro block with a 90mm sheave and a swivelling head. It has a larger sheave diameter to cut rope friction and glass fibre reinforced cheeks that keep lines from wedging. A stainless steel strap adds strength, and a simple switch changes the head between swivelling and fixed. The shackle post is 16.5mm in diameter and the maximum pin is 9.8mm.
Our take
The 90mm sheave is the larger size the maker uses to cut rope friction, and the glass fibre cheeks are there to stop lines wedging. A switch changes the head between swivelling and fixed, so one block can be set up either way on the shackle.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
