This is a Lewmar Power Grip winch handle with the maker's One Touch locking system, in a 10 in length. The handle is a forged alloy build, described as light and corrosion resistant. A release lever runs the full length of the handle. Squeezing it frees the handle so you can lift it out of the winch with one hand, and the same one-handed action locks it in.
Our take
The One Touch release lever runs the whole length of the handle, so freeing it takes one squeeze and a lift with one hand. That leaves your other hand free to hold on or tend the line while you take the handle out of the winch.
From our buying guide
Harken says its handles fit international standard winch sockets and other makers' winches, except old bronze Merriman-style ones. Length sets the leverage: Harken says an 8 in grinds faster but gives 20% less power than a 10 in.
Check before you buy:
- The real length is what you expect, since lengths are nominal. Barton's 8 inch handle measures 225 mm.
- Locking or plain suits you. Lewmar weighs the security of a lock-in against the flexibility of a traditional handle, and Harken says racers prefer plain.
- It floats, if that matters to you. Lewmar says its composite Titan handles float if dropped overboard.
