Where to buy
The Lewmar Axis is an electric anchor for shallow water that holds a boat in up to 8 feet of water. It deploys downward in about 8 seconds and does so quietly, which leaves the area around the boat clear for fishing. The finish is powder coated aluminum, available in white or black. The 8 foot depth limit is the figure that matters most, because it sets the range where this anchor does its job.
Our take
This suits anglers who fish or anchor in water up to 8 feet and want a quiet, fast deployment that keeps the space around the boat clear. It is the wrong choice for deeper water, since 8 feet is its stated limit. Its main limit is that depth ceiling, so check your water depth before you buy.
From our buying guide
The Coast Guard does not regulate anchors, so no anchor carries its approval. Each maker sizes on its own assumptions, so a size on one chart does not translate to another.
Check before you buy:
- You know what wind the maker's chart assumes. Rocna's assumes 50 knots and Fortress's 30 knots.
- It fits your bow, since makers say some designs fit bow rollers, bow pulpits or bowsprits better.
- The type suits your bottom. A Coast Guard Auxiliary article says the right type depends a lot on your boat, your anchoring and the make-up of the bottom.
