The Lewmar 40ST Evo is a two-speed self-tailing winch with a chrome finish and black jaws, taking 5/16 to 1/2 inch line. The top cap unscrews with your fingers, so servicing needs no tools. A stainless steel feeder arm covers the winch, and its position can be adjusted to guide the rope out smoothly. It can be converted to electric, and it carries a 7 year warranty.
Our take
The 40ST's top cap unscrews by hand, so routine servicing needs no tools. Its stainless feeder arm can be repositioned to guide the rope out of the jaws, which matters when you tail a 5/16 to 1/2 inch line.
From our buying guide
A winch's size number sits close to its top power ratio, though not exactly, and first-gear ratios vary more between brands. Each maker publishes its own sizing chart, so use the chart from the maker you're buying.
Check before you buy:
- It fits your existing holes, since same-size winches from different makers need not share a bolt circle.
- The self-tailing jaws take your rope, since they have a range.
- You have the right bolts. Harken does not supply them, and the makers disagree about countersunk heads.
