The Lewmar 16AST is a size 16 single speed aluminum self-tailing winch for line from 5/16 to 1/2 inch. Floating jaws adapt to a range of line diameters, and a low friction feeder arm guides the line into them. Inside, permanently lubricated stainless steel roller bearings carry the load, and the main gear shafts are stainless steel. It can be hand stripped for servicing without tools, and its pawls stay captive when the drum comes off.
Our take
The floating jaws on the 16AST adapt automatically to line diameters across its 5/16 to 1/2 inch range, so there is nothing to adjust when you change line within that spread. It is single speed, so there is no second gear to call on when the load climbs.
