The Kidde Mariner KD57W-5BC is a compact portable dry chemical extinguisher rated 5-B:C, meaning it handles flammable liquid and gas fires as well as electrical fires. It holds 2 lb of sodium bicarbonate in a painted aluminum cylinder with a metal valve and stainless steel lever, and it ships with a strap bracket for mounting. It discharges for 8 to 11 seconds with a 6 to 8 ft reach at 100 psi, and a gauge shows whether it is charged. Kidde claims 12 times the corrosion resistance of the saltwater test standard. It is USCG approved, UL Listed, single use, and must be replaced after discharge or at 12 years old.
Our take
The 8 to 11 second discharge from a 2 lb charge means you get one short, well-aimed burst, so you want it mounted where you can reach it fast. The saltwater-rated aluminum body suits a wet boat, but once it's been fired it's finished and has to be replaced.
From our buying guide
Powered boats with permanently installed fuel tanks, or spaces where fuel vapors can be trapped, must carry them in a number set by length. The Coast Guard's FAQ says a 10-B counts only as one 5-B, even though it contains more agent.
Check before you buy:
- The label on the bottle states 'Marine Type USCG Approved'.
- The date on a disposable leaves it plenty of life, since the Coast Guard's FAQ says it is expired once it is more than 12 years old.
- It comes with its bracket, since makers tie the approval to it.
