The Johnson Pump UltimaBilge 1250 GPH is a 12V DC bilge pump with its water sensing built into the pump body, so it needs no separate float or switch. It can still be run by hand from a control switch or panel. The 1250 GPH version comes with threaded discharge ports for both 1-1/8 inch and 1-1/4 inch hose. The check valve and impeller cover come off, which makes cleaning simple.

Our take

Sensing built into the pump body means one unit does both the detecting and the pumping, so there is no separate switch to mount or wire. Manual operation from a panel switch is still available, so you can run it yourself to test it.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
