The Johnson Pump Proline is a 750 gph bilge pump with a water-cooled motor. The maker says that motor gives greater torque and uses less power. The housing is resin, and it resists shock, detergents, fuel and corrosives. It has a quick release bracket and a tough impeller, stands 4 3/8 inches high, and carries a 3-year warranty.
Our take
The 750 gph Proline's water-cooled motor is claimed to deliver greater torque on less power, which means a lighter load on the boat's electrical system while it runs. The resin housing is meant to shrug off fuel and detergents in the bilge.
From our buying guide
Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
- You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
