The Low Boy is a 12V DC cartridge-style bilge pump rated at 750 gph. It stands only 2.8 in high, so it is made for tight bilge areas. The motor is a removable cartridge for maintenance, and a removable check valve is included. Both a straight and a 90 degree elbow discharge port come with it. The pump measures 5.75 in long, 3.2 in wide and 2.82 in high, and the recommended fuse is 5A. For automatic operation, Johnson says to pair it only with its electro-magnetic float switch.
Our take
A height of only 2.82 in and a motor that is a removable cartridge built for easy maintenance make the Low Boy a pump you can service in a cramped bilge. For automatic use Johnson says it should only be paired with its electro-magnetic float switch, so plan on that switch for the install.
From our buying guide
Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
- You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
