The Johnson Pump 32903 is a compact cartridge bilge pump rated at 1000 GPH on 12 volts. The motor and impeller are one unit that can be pulled out for cleaning or replacement, so the whole pump need not be replaced. It has a 3/4 inch outlet and comes with straight and 90 degree discharge ports. A float or Ultima switch can be added for automatic operation, and the motor is water-cooled.
Our take
The motor and impeller are a single cartridge unit that needs no tools for maintenance, so a fouled pump can be cleaned or the motor swapped rather than replacing the pump. At 1000 GPH and 12V it needs a float or Ultima switch added to run automatically.
From our buying guide
Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
- You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
