The Johnson Pump 40004 is a heavy duty 12V DC bilge pump rated at 4000 GPH. It has a thermoplastic body, a stainless steel shaft and hardware, and a liquid cooled motor on double ball bearings. It comes with a removable check valve and has two threaded discharge ports, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. The mounting base fits comparable Rule bases, and the pump is built to ISO 8849 Marine and CE standards.
Our take
The 4000 GPH rating on this Johnson pump comes with a 15A draw at 12V, so the wiring and fuse need to be sized for that load. The universal base that fits comparable Rule bases helps if you are replacing an older pump.

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
