This is a 12V Johnson Pump bilge pump rated at 1600 gallons per hour. It comes prewired to the Ultima digital, on-demand switch, so the pump and its automatic switching arrive as one unit. It draws 7 amps and ships with internally threaded duraports for 1-1/8 inch and 1-1/4 inch hose, plus a removable check valve. It can also be adapted to Rule bases, and Johnson backs it with a 3 year warranty.
Our take
The 1600 GPH rating at a 7 amp draw is the number to weigh here: a lot of water moved for a modest load on the battery. With the Ultima switch prewired, you have one less part to wire and mount down in the bilge.
From our buying guide
Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
- You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
