The Johnson Pump 01604-002 is a 24 volt bilge pump sold as the 1600 Auto Bilge. Straight-out capacity is 1600 GPH, or 100 L/min, and it falls to 1550 GPH at 3 ft. It draws 3.5 amps and calls for a 6 amp fuse. The 1600 GPH model uses a lip seal, and a removable check valve is included.

Our take

The 1600 GPH rating only drops to 1550 GPH at 3 ft, so little flow is lost when the pump has to push water up a short distance. It draws 3.5 amps with a 6 amp fuse size, and a removable check valve is included.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
