A 12V bronze-headed impeller pump from the Water Puppy line, for general duty such as bilge, livewell and washdown work. It self-primes from dry to 4 ft, and once wet to 20 ft, and it is rated at 5.4 gpm at 10 ft of head. It is ignition protected to USCG 183.410 and ISO 8846 and runs on a permanent magnet motor. The end cover comes off so the impeller can be replaced without disconnecting the plumbing.
Our take
The removable end cover lets you change the impeller without disconnecting the plumbing, which keeps a worn impeller a quick job in place. The maker also advises an inlet strainer, since a flexible impeller pump will be handling bilge debris.
From our buying guide
Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
