The Jabsco Par-Max HD4 is a 12V DC freshwater delivery pump rated at 4 GPM and 40 PSI. It uses a co-molded diaphragm and a sealed pressure switch, so it only runs when a tap calls for water, and it primes itself. The HD version has a heavier motor with a cast aluminum lower housing. It tolerates running dry, has an integrated bypass module to cut cycling, and pulls a maximum of 10.0 amps.

Our take

Its 10.0 maximum amps at 12V DC is the figure to size wiring and fuse around, and the integrated bypass module reduces cycling for smoother flow at the tap. Running dry without damage means an emptied tank will not hurt the pump.

From our buying guide

Size a freshwater pump by the outlets that must run at once. Jabsco's rule of thumb is 1 GPM per outlet, and the listed flow is open flow, which falls as pressure rises.

Check before you buy:

  • The data sheet shows flow at pressure. One Shurflo gives 4.0 GPM at 0 psi and 2.0 GPM at 40 psi.
  • You have an inlet strainer, which Jabsco says is required in every freshwater pump installation.
  • An accumulator suits the pump. Jabsco says one cuts cycling on a pressure-switch system, and not to use its accumulators with variable-speed pumps.
