The APEX 16 VX MSI+ is a Humminbird chartplotter and fishfinder with a 15.6 inch Full HD touchscreen running at 1920 by 1080. It can be driven by touch or by keypad, and it has internal GPS with a basemap covering the continental U.S. coast. This is the control head only version, so no transducer is included. Dual sonar ports and a dedicated channel for 2D CHIRP transducers up to 2kW let you pair it with your own choice. NMEA 2000, dual ethernet ports, WiFi and Bluetooth handle the networking.
Our take
The missing transducer is the defining point of this APEX 16: the head is built to take whatever you pair with it, with a dedicated 2kW 2D CHIRP port and two ethernet ports. That suits a refit or an existing network, but you must budget for matching the transducer yourself.
From our buying guide
What's in the box depends on the part number: Raymarine sells one screen display only, with charts, with a transducer, or with both. Not every chart card fits every plotter, either.
Check before you buy:
- The part number includes the charts and transducer you expect.
- It reads the charts you want, and you know how long their updates last, since many come with a one-year subscription.
- A touchscreen suits your helm, since Raymarine warns that prolonged rain or water wash can cause false touches.
