The Hella NaviLED towing lamp is an LED navigation light with a minimum visible distance of 2 nautical miles and a black shroud. It is a sealed unit, rated IP 67, and comes pre-wired with marine cable. It runs on 9 to 33 V DC. Hella says it draws less than 10% of the power of a bulb lamp of the same visible distance, and the LED has no filaments to break.
Our take
The 9 to 33 V DC input range is the useful figure on this lamp, since the maker says it keeps lighting through voltage swings and low battery voltage. With under 10% of a bulb lamp's draw at the same visible distance, it is easy on the battery at anchor or under tow.
From our buying guide
The lights a boat must show depend on its length and how it's being driven. A sailboat under power is a power-driven vessel and shows power-driven lights.
Check before you buy:
- The label gives its visibility in nautical miles, and that range meets the minimum for your boat's length.
- The maker rates it for boats of your length.
- A replacement LED is certified with the fixture it's going into, since the Coast Guard warns that replacement lighting may not meet the rules.
