The Hella NaviLED C-5 is a 2 NM stern lamp with a black shroud. It is an LED unit, so there is no bulb to replace, and it is sealed and IP 67 certified. It is made to run on a wide 9-33V DC supply, with electronics that hold the light steady through voltage fluctuations. Hella says it uses less than 10% of the power of a bulb lamp for the same visible distance, and it is listed as compliant with ABYC C-5.
Our take
The 9-33V DC range with electronics that ride out voltage fluctuations means the stern light keeps working as a battery sags. Using under 10% of a bulb lamp's power for the same distance also eases the load on a small house bank.
From our buying guide
The lights a boat must show depend on its length and how it's being driven. A sailboat under power is a power-driven vessel and shows power-driven lights.
Check before you buy:
- The label gives its visibility in nautical miles, and that range meets the minimum for your boat's length.
- The maker rates it for boats of your length.
- A replacement LED is certified with the fixture it's going into, since the Coast Guard warns that replacement lighting may not meet the rules.
