The Hella Model 3562 masthead light is a compact navigation lamp in a black housing, rated for 2 NM visibility. The 3562 series is aimed at yachts and powerboats and is saltwater resistant and non-magnetic. A snap lock housing lets you swap the bulb without any tools. The approvals listed for the series are IMO Col Reg 72, RINA, USCG, ABYC A-16 and Maritime NZ.
Our take
The snap lock housing means a blown bulb on the masthead can be swapped without tools, which is a real convenience for a lamp you may have to service at night. The 2 NM visibility is the figure to check against your vessel's requirements.
From our buying guide
The lights a boat must show depend on its length and how it's being driven. A sailboat under power is a power-driven vessel and shows power-driven lights.
Check before you buy:
- The label gives its visibility in nautical miles, and that range meets the minimum for your boat's length.
- The maker rates it for boats of your length.
- A replacement LED is certified with the fixture it's going into, since the Coast Guard warns that replacement lighting may not meet the rules.
