The Hella 3562 is a compact bi-color bow light that shows red to port and green to starboard. It mounts on a vertical surface and runs on a 12V, 10W bulb, with visibility of 1 nautical mile. The housing and lens are UV and impact resistant plastic, and the housing is saltwater resistant and non-magnetic. Cable enters through the base plate with a rubber grommet, and the housing lifts off the base so the bulb can be changed without tools. Approvals include IMO COLREG, USCG, RINA, ABYC A-16 and CE.
Our take
The housing lifts off the base without tools, so changing the 10W bulb takes only your hands, which is handy when a bow light goes out at sea. The saltwater-resistant, non-magnetic housing is a sensible match for a light that lives on the bow.
From our buying guide
The lights a boat must show depend on its length and how it's being driven. A sailboat under power is a power-driven vessel and shows power-driven lights.
Check before you buy:
- The label gives its visibility in nautical miles, and that range meets the minimum for your boat's length.
- The maker rates it for boats of your length.
- A replacement LED is certified with the fixture it's going into, since the Coast Guard warns that replacement lighting may not meet the rules.
