The Hella Series 2894 is a bi-color navigation light in a black housing with red and green lenses. It shows a 225 degree arc and is rated for sail or power boats up to 65.6 ft. The housing is non-magnetic and seawater-proof, and it opens without tools. A 12 volt bulb is included. Visibility is given as 2 to 3 miles.
Our take
The snap-type housing opens without tools, which makes getting at the bulb a simple job. The bulb and its contacts hang at the top of the housing, a layout the maker says keeps the connections from oxidizing.
From our buying guide
The lights a boat must show depend on its length and how it's being driven. A sailboat under power is a power-driven vessel and shows power-driven lights.
Check before you buy:
- The label gives its visibility in nautical miles, and that range meets the minimum for your boat's length.
- The maker rates it for boats of your length.
- A replacement LED is certified with the fixture it's going into, since the Coast Guard warns that replacement lighting may not meet the rules.
