This is a load-sensing ratchet block with a 75 mm cheek. Under low loads it rolls freely in both directions, and once the load rises it engages the ratchet assist by itself, with no switch to flip. You can adjust the point where the ratchet engages. The sheave is eight-sided hardkote-anodized aluminum and the ratchet pawl is stainless steel.
Our take
The adjustable ratchet engagement point lets you decide how much load it takes before the ratchet assist cuts in, and below that point the sheave runs free in both directions. That makes it easy to tune to how much effort you want to put in on a sheet.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
