The Harken 7402 is a 57mm Carbo ratchet stanchion block, used as a lead block for furling lines. It clamps to a stanchion with four screws, so the stanchion and lifelines can stay in place. The ratchet helps keep tension on the line while it is spooled, and the ball and socket base lets you line the block up for a smooth lead aft.
Our take
The ratchet in the 7402 holds tension as the furling line spools, which helps the unit furl smoothly. With a four-screw clamp that fits without removing the stanchion, it can be fitted without touching the lifelines.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
