The Harken 2166 is a Power3 ratchet block with a shackle head and the titanium 1.5x grip, rated at 15:1 holding power. The ratchet switch works from both sides. It carries a 500 lb (227 kg) maximum working load and a 2000 lb (907 kg) breaking load, takes line up to 3/8 inch (10 mm) and weighs 3.0 oz (85 g). The maker notes that the sharper sheave facets can increase line wear.
Our take
The 15:1 titanium ratchet grips 1.5 times harder than the standard ratchet, which the maker aims at breezy, puffy conditions. The cost is sheave facets that can wear line faster, so think about the line you run through it.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
