The Harken 2170 is a 57mm Ratchamatic Power3 block with the silver 2x grip, which gives 20:1 holding power, and a T2 soft attach head. The sideplates are composite fiber-reinforced and the sheave is aluminum, so the block weighs only 2.5 oz (71g). It takes line up to 3/8 in (10mm), with a 500 lb (227kg) maximum working load and a 2000 lb (907kg) breaking load. Load on the line switches it into ratchet mode.
Our take
At 20:1, the silver ratchet holds twice what the standard block does, and the maker points it at strong, steady wind. A 500 lb working load on a 2.5 oz block shows how much the T2 build packs into little weight.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
