The Harken 2136 is a 57 mm Carbo ratchet block with a swivel head and a becket. Its sheave is 2-1/4 inches across and the safe working load is 500 lb. The sheave is machined aluminum with eight facets that grip the line. The sideplates are nylon resin packed with long glass fibers rather than steel straps. The ratchet can be switched on or off, and at this size it adds up to 10:1 holding power.
Our take
The ratchet switches on and off at the center airhole, and at 57mm it adds up to 10:1 holding power. That lets a hand hold a loaded line and release it under control, within the 500 lb safe working load.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
