Manuals

This is a Harken 40 mm triple ratchet block with a swivel, a becket, a cam cleat and a 29mm block in the same body. Its machined aluminum sheaves have eight facets to grip the line, and a Hardkote anodized finish adds durability. A recessed switch, reachable from either side, handles the ratchet. The block weighs 9.5 oz., has a SWL of 900 lbs. and takes line up to 3/16".

Our take

A becket, a cam cleat and a 29mm block share one body on this 40 mm triple, and the whole thing weighs 9.5 oz. with a SWL of 900 lbs. Line is limited to 3/16", so rope choice is the thing to check first.

From our buying guide

Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.

Check before you buy:

  • A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
  • Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
  • A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
