The Harken 40 mm Carbo ratchet block is a single block with a swivel base and a cam cleat. The ratchet is there to help when you are handling higher loads by hand, and the whole block weighs 4.6 oz. A recessed switch can be operated from either side. The finish is Hardkote anodizing. It takes line up to 1/4 in and carries a safe working load of 150 lbs, so keep it within those limits.
Our take
The recessed switch can be operated from either side, so it is no harder to reach on one side of the block than the other. The 150 lbs working load and 1/4 in line size make this a light block, best kept to small control lines.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
