The Harken 40 mm Carbo ratchet block is a single block with a swivel, a becket and a cam cleat. The sheave is machined aluminum with eight facets to grip the line, and the finish is Hardkote anodizing. A recessed switch, reachable from either side, controls the ratchet, which gives help with higher loads by hand. Harken describes it as a high performance dinghy block with low weight and small size.
Our take
A recessed ratchet switch that works from either side means the setting can be changed from whichever side you are standing on. Combined with the low weight and small size, Harken pitches it at high performance dinghies.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
