The Harken 2608 is a single 40 mm Carbo ratchet block on a swivel head. It is 3-5/8 inches long, weighs 2 oz and takes line up to 3/8 inch. Ratchet assistance helps you hold higher loads by hand, and a recessed switch that works from either side controls it. The machined aluminum sheaves are cut with eight facets that grip the line, and the safe working load is 300 lb.
Our take
At 2 oz and 3-5/8 inches long, the 2608 is a small block with a 300 lb safe working load, which is the figure to check against your loads. The ratchet eases holding higher loads by hand, and line thicker than 3/8 inch will not fit.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
