This Harken fiddle block is a 40 mm Carbo type with a swivel head. The body is black nylon reinforced with long strand glass, and the sheave runs on ball bearings with rounded races. It has a safe working load of 485 lb, takes line up to 3/8 inch and weighs 1.8 oz. The open design is easy to service, and the cam arm can be set in many positions.
Our take
The open design is the practical feature here: you can get at the 40 mm sheave and bearings for cleaning without taking much apart. At 1.8 oz and 485 lb working load, it is a light-duty tackle block for vangs and control lines.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
