Harken's 340 is a 29 mm Carbo swivel block. The body is long glass fiber injection molded and weighs 0.9 oz, with an SWL of 330 lbs. Harken describes the 29 mm Carbo blocks as a mainsheet block for small dinghies, the Optimist among them, and as a low-friction control block on a boat of any size. Listed jobs include outhauls, traveler controls, cunninghams, flag halyards and barberhauls.
Our take
The 330 lb SWL keeps this 29 mm swivel block to light control duties such as outhauls, traveler controls and cunninghams, all uses the maker lists. At 0.9 oz the glass fiber body adds very little weight to whatever it is fitted to.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
