This is a 40 mm cheek block from Harken, part number 2614, with a ratchet that can be switched on or off from either side through a recessed switch. The sheave is machined aluminum with eight facets cut in to grip the line, and the hardware is hard anodized for durability. It carries an SWL of 300 lbs, takes line up to 3/8 inch and weighs 1.6 oz.
Our take
A 300 lbs SWL at 1.6 oz makes this a very light block, and the 3/8 inch line limit keeps it to thin control lines. The recessed ratchet switch works from either side, so you can change modes whichever way the block faces.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
