The Harken 2159 is a 40mm T2 Ratchamatic block with a soft-attach system. The side plates are composite and the sheave is hardcoat-anodized aluminum. It weighs .9 oz, the sheave is 1-9/16 inches across, and the maker lists a breaking load of 1000 lb. The block switches from free-running to ratchet mode as load comes on the line. The maker points it at dinghies, beachcats and sportboats, for mainsheets and spinnaker sheets. It takes line up to 3/8 inch.
Our take
At .9 oz with composite side plates and an aluminum sheave, the 2159 carries little weight, and its ratchet cuts in under load and lets unloaded sheets run out freely. The 3/8 inch maximum line size marks it as a small-boat block.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
