The Harken 2139 is a 57 mm Carbo ratchet block with a swivel, becket and cam cleat. The sideplates are lightweight nylon resin packed with long glass fibers, and the machined aluminum sheave has eight facets to grip the line. An on/off switch sits in the center airhole and can be reached from both sides. With the ratchet on, the maker quotes up to 10:1 additional holding power, and the block has a 600 lb SWL.
Our take
The on/off switch in the center airhole, reachable from either side, is the useful part of this 57 mm Carbo block: leave it on to hold a loaded line, or switch it off for free running. The becket and cam cleat add more jobs to one block on a dinghy or keelboat.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
