This is Harken's Fly soft-attach block in the 18 mm size, built around high-tech line. The inner race and rivet are stainless steel, as are the ball bearings, and the sideplates are fibre-reinforced composite. A length of Spectra line comes with it for the lashing. The maker aims it at foiling dinghies and sportboats, along with vang cascades.
Our take
Stainless ball bearings in an 18 mm sheave, with composite sideplates, make this a small block built around high-tech line. Foiling dinghies, sportboats and vang cascades are the jobs the maker names for it, and the Spectra lashing is included.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
