Specifications

Connection
3/4" NPT

The Groco BVS-750 combines a raw water strainer and a ball valve in a single bronze unit, with a 3/4 inch NPT connection. It stands 5-3/4 inches tall. The valve has a stainless steel ball and stem. The strainer cap screws on and off, and the standard basket is 304 stainless, 40 mesh, with 0.077 inch holes. The handle has a square hole that takes a hex-socket ratchet for extra leverage.

Our take

Building the seacock into the strainer means one fitting and one spot in the bilge to reach for winterizing and maintenance. The 304 stainless basket is 40 mesh with 0.077 inch holes, and the cap screws off to get at it.

From our buying guide

Makers disagree on where to mount a strainer: Groco's installation sheet recommends above the waterline, and Westerbeke's generator manual says at or below it. Perko says to consult the engine manual for pipe size and strainer location.

Check before you buy:

  • It matches your pipe size, since Perko says reducers may cause engine damage and are not recommended.
  • You can reach the basket, since Groco says to inspect and clean it frequently.
  • Open-area figures are compared within one maker, since each states its own measure.
