Specifications

1-1/4" NPT

The Groco BVS-1250 combines a raw water strainer and a seacock in one bronze unit with a 1-1/4 inch NPT connection. It stands 14-11/32 inches tall. The ball valve is full flow, with a stainless steel ball and stem. The standard basket is 304 stainless steel, 40 mesh, with 0.077 inch holes. The handle has a square hole that takes a hex-socket ratchet for extra leverage.

Our take

The strainer and seacock come as one bronze unit, so there is one component to install and one bilge location to reach for servicing. The square hole in the handle takes a hex-socket ratchet, which gives you extra leverage on the valve.

From our buying guide

Makers disagree on where to mount a strainer: Groco's installation sheet recommends above the waterline, and Westerbeke's generator manual says at or below it. Perko says to consult the engine manual for pipe size and strainer location.

Check before you buy:

  • It matches your pipe size, since Perko says reducers may cause engine damage and are not recommended.
  • You can reach the basket, since Groco says to inspect and clean it frequently.
  • Open-area figures are compared within one maker, since each states its own measure.
