The ARG-750-P is a bronze raw water strainer from Groco with a plastic basket. It has 3/4 inch NPT ports threaded internally, stands 8-1/8 inches tall and weighs 3.7 lb. The basket has 0.077 inch holes and 45% open area, giving a screen area 36 times the pipe area. There are no tie rods or gaskets, since O-rings seal the mating surfaces. The retainer cap screws on and off without tools, and a reusable strap lets you lift out the whole strainer.
Our take
The 36:1 screen to pipe area ratio is the number to note: the basket offers a lot of area compared with the 3/4 inch pipe. The screw-on retainer cap opens without tools, so checking it is quick work.
From our buying guide
Makers disagree on where to mount a strainer: Groco's installation sheet recommends above the waterline, and Westerbeke's generator manual says at or below it. Perko says to consult the engine manual for pipe size and strainer location.
Check before you buy:
- It matches your pipe size, since Perko says reducers may cause engine damage and are not recommended.
- You can reach the basket, since Groco says to inspect and clean it frequently.
- Open-area figures are compared within one maker, since each states its own measure.
