The Groco ARG-1250-S is a bronze strainer with 1-1/4 inch NPT ports, standing 10-1/2 inches tall, and fitted with a stainless basket. There are no tie rods or gaskets, and O-rings seal all the mating surfaces. The basket has 0.077 inch holes and 45% open area. A screw-on cap gives access without tools, and a strap mounting system lets the whole strainer be removed without tools. It also has a bonding connection.
Our take
The screw-on cap and the absence of tie rods mean you can open the strainer and pull the basket without tools, so checking the 45% open area basket for debris is quick. Groco recommends monel for saltwater, and this one is stainless.
From our buying guide
Makers disagree on where to mount a strainer: Groco's installation sheet recommends above the waterline, and Westerbeke's generator manual says at or below it. Perko says to consult the engine manual for pipe size and strainer location.
Check before you buy:
- It matches your pipe size, since Perko says reducers may cause engine damage and are not recommended.
- You can reach the basket, since Groco says to inspect and clean it frequently.
- Open-area figures are compared within one maker, since each states its own measure.
