The Groco ARG-1250 is a bronze raw water strainer with 1-1/4 inch NPT ports and a body 10-1/2 inches tall. It carries a Monel basket, which the maker recommends for saltwater service. There are no tie rods or gaskets in the body, since O-rings seal the mating surfaces. A screw-on retainer cap opens it without tools. The basket has 0.077 inch holes, 96 holes per square inch and 45% open area.
Our take
The screw-on retainer cap and O-ring seals mean you can pull the Monel basket without tools and without gaskets to chase. That makes checking for debris a simple routine job, and Monel is the basket the maker recommends for saltwater.
From our buying guide
Makers disagree on where to mount a strainer: Groco's installation sheet recommends above the waterline, and Westerbeke's generator manual says at or below it. Perko says to consult the engine manual for pipe size and strainer location.
Check before you buy:
- It matches your pipe size, since Perko says reducers may cause engine damage and are not recommended.
- You can reach the basket, since Groco says to inspect and clean it frequently.
- Open-area figures are compared within one maker, since each states its own measure.
