The Groco ARG-1000 is a bronze strainer with a 1" NPT connection and a Monel basket, standing 9" tall. It has no tie rods or gaskets, because O-rings seal every mating surface. The basket has 0.077" holes, 96 holes/in² and 45% open area. A screw-on cap opens it with no tools, and a strap mounting system lets you take the whole strainer off without tools.
Our take
The screw-on retainer cap is the feature to look at, because it opens the strainer for basket cleaning without tools. With no gaskets to chase and O-rings sealing the joints, servicing it comes down to unscrewing the cap and pulling the Monel basket.
From our buying guide
Makers disagree on where to mount a strainer: Groco's installation sheet recommends above the waterline, and Westerbeke's generator manual says at or below it. Perko says to consult the engine manual for pipe size and strainer location.
Check before you buy:
- It matches your pipe size, since Perko says reducers may cause engine damage and are not recommended.
- You can reach the basket, since Groco says to inspect and clean it frequently.
- Open-area figures are compared within one maker, since each states its own measure.
