The Garmin Reactor 40 kicker autopilot, model 010-00705-96, is made for boats with small gasoline outboards up to 20 horsepower. It comes with a floating handheld remote that has a sunlight-readable display. A button on the system adjusts the throttle setting, and the kit includes a throttle actuator. A tilt tube in stainless steel is supplied for Yamaha and Honda outboards. The system connects to an NMEA 2000 network, with a 2 meter drop cable in the box.
Our take
The 20 horsepower ceiling on gasoline outboards decides who this kit is for: kicker motors on small boats, so check your engine against that figure first. The remote also needs a compatible display that is sold separately.
From our buying guide
Raymarine describes a typical autopilot as four parts: a heading sensor, a control unit, a drive and a control head. Bought alone, the parts don't steer, and Raymarine says the operator must stay at the helm at all times.
Check before you buy:
- The box list has the drive and control head you need, since packs can leave out a major part.
- It's rated for your boat the way the maker measures it. Raymarine sizes on fully laden displacement, often 20% above the designed figure.
- On hydraulic steering, the pump's range covers your steering cylinder's volume.
