The Garmin Reactor 40 Kicker Autopilot is made for small gasoline boats with outboard motors up to 25 horsepower. It holds heading and keeps a course, and this version comes with the GHC 50 autopilot instrument. A floating handheld remote controls throttle settings, including dropping to idle when netting a fish. The GHC 50 adds a dedicated touchscreen display at the helm and shares data and settings with Garmin MFDs. NMEA 2000 cabling is included, with a 2 m drop cable.
Our take
The 25 horsepower outboard limit is the number to check first: this Reactor 40 is built for small gasoline kickers, not larger engines. Within that, it holds heading and takes throttle control from a floating remote, so you can drop to idle when netting a fish.
From our buying guide
Raymarine describes a typical autopilot as four parts: a heading sensor, a control unit, a drive and a control head. Bought alone, the parts don't steer, and Raymarine says the operator must stay at the helm at all times.
Check before you buy:
- The box list has the drive and control head you need, since packs can leave out a major part.
- It's rated for your boat the way the maker measures it. Raymarine sizes on fully laden displacement, often 20% above the designed figure.
- On hydraulic steering, the pump's range covers your steering cylinder's volume.
