The Reactor 40 is a Garmin autopilot for kicker motors, built for boats with small gasoline outboards up to 20 horsepower. It holds a heading or follows a route, and the kit includes a floating handheld remote with a sunlight-readable display. A button on the remote fine-tunes the throttle setting. This version is sold without the optional GHC 20 display, and the box carries a 2 m NMEA 2000 drop cable for connecting to the network.

Our take

Rated for outboards up to 20 horsepower, the Reactor 40 is made for kicker motors. The remote's throttle button takes you to idle for netting a fish, but without a GHC 20 the remote needs a compatible ANT-capable MFD to work.

From our buying guide

Raymarine describes a typical autopilot as four parts: a heading sensor, a control unit, a drive and a control head. Bought alone, the parts don't steer, and Raymarine says the operator must stay at the helm at all times.

Check before you buy:

  • The box list has the drive and control head you need, since packs can leave out a major part.
  • It's rated for your boat the way the maker measures it. Raymarine sizes on fully laden displacement, often 20% above the designed figure.
  • On hydraulic steering, the pump's range covers your steering cylinder's volume.
